Tradition of running cows in Vadgam village
Surendnagar: Vadgam village of Patdi taluk held a cow race on New Year’s Day in the villages on New Year’s Day as per a unique tradition that has been going on for 150 years i.e. from the time of Raja Rajwada. During this year, more than 300 cows were decorated with ghee in their pods and were run along with cattle in groups. In this unique competition, the cowherd who comes first is also honored in a special way by wearing a turban.

The tradition of running cows has been going on for 150 years
In Vadgam village of Patdi taluk of Surendranagar district, annual cow running has been going on since ancient times of the 150-year-old Raja Rajwada. According to this unique tradition, a group of cowherds dressed in traditional costumes run in front of and behind the herd of cows.
The year of Vikram Samvat may have entered the digital age, but ancient traditions are still alive in rural areas. Running of cows with cowherds on the day of the new year is the biggest attraction of the new year of this village. The women, men and children of the village wake up early in the morning and go to each other’s houses to greet the New Year.

Cows are provoked by bursting crackers
At 10 a.m., the leaders of various communities of the village gather and discuss the new year’s farming Lekha Jokha and village development. Which is called Gameru. Which is also called Dior nowadays. Here such people present their interesting stories and views for village development. After that, a large group of dairas beat the drum and the village padar observes the tradition of running such cows from the village chora. Young and old welcome the arrival of the herd of cows by bursting firecrackers. The whole atmosphere resounds with squeals of joy.
According to the elders of the village, at one time animals like horses and camels were also run which has now stopped. Herds of cowherds of the Maldhari community race in front and behind the herd of cows dressed in traditional attire. These cowherds control the cows with amazing composure when they are provoked by bursting crackers.

On the day of the sitting year, the villagers collect the contribution and feed the cows with fodder. Even after noon, the sequence of greeting and meeting at each other’s house starts, which continues till late evening. A gathering-like atmosphere emerges in the village as outlying villagers turn up in large numbers to witness the age-old cow-running tradition along with the sitting year.
