The National Education Policy 2020 envisions an education system in the country that is rooted in Indian culture and that speaks to the cultural achievements of human endeavour and knowledge in all fields, while preparing students to engage constructively with the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. The basis for this ambitious vision for school education has been clearly laid out in various curriculum areas at all educational levels through the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE) 2023.
NCP-SE 2023 aims to equip students with skills that are essential for their development as they progress in life. It seeks to enhance their analytical, descriptive and expressive abilities and prepare them for the challenges and opportunities ahead. The diverse curriculum covers nine subjects—three languages, science, mathematics, social science, art education, physical education and well-being as well as vocational education—which promotes their all-round development. One of the subject areas as per the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE) is ‘Physical Education and Well-being’. The main objective of this subject is to inculcate interest in physical activity and sports, develop the ability to engage in sports skillfully and develop human values like resilience, empathy and cooperation even after struggles. India has a wonderful tradition of yoga, which provides a holistic experience for mental and physical well-being.
In the subject of ‘Physical Education and Well-being’, various aspects of yoga like Yama, Niyam, Asana, Pranayama and Meditation are developmentally incorporated from Standard 3 to Secondary Stage. This provides a strong foundation for holistic health and well-being.
Group prayer in the Bala Sabha is important for the development of life-oriented qualities in students. It gives students an opportunity to start the day with peace and concentration. Prayer helps in developing self-confidence and moral values in students.
Along with the development of physical skills, group exercises inculcate the qualities of discipline and obedience. In group exercises, the quick decision-making power to act on orders is developed.
Sports have played an important role in every country of the world since ancient times. Sports provide activity to the body and are beneficial for health. Sports, unknowingly, contribute significantly to the development of strength, agility, alertness and fearlessness in the body by developing qualities like strength, speed and flexibility. Currently, there are two periods a week for sports in standards 1 to 8. There is one period each for art and music a week. Children’s assemblies are organized on Saturdays in most schools.
Children’s mental development occurs through games such as mathematical games, puzzle solving games, spelling games, general knowledge games, fun games, logical problem solving games, etc.
According to NEP-2020 and NCF-SE-2023, certain educational issues in each subject have been prescribed to be taught through project work. Project work is a practical, student-centered approach for students where students are actively involved in solving real-world problems or exploring complex issues.
Planning and implementation of Pre-vocational Education (Standards 6 to 8) under Ten Bagless Day is suggested in NEP-2020. In which, to introduce children to professions/occupations that contribute to their daily lives. To bring them into contact with the world outside the classroom in school. To provide information about local professions, local
artisans, craftsmen, home industries, small industries etc.
To provide information about the content of literacy subjects in the Ten Bagless Day program, to benefit from the knowledge and experiences of experts through local various
sector visits, to get an opportunity to develop various vocational skills. To develop respect for each profession, to get scope for career choice for future career. To develop understanding of different professions/occupations and to develop qualities like team spirit, leadership and sociability etc.
Thus, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has been introduced with the aim of bringing about a radical change in the Indian education system. The main objective of this policy is to develop the students holistically rather than just imparting bookish knowledge. In this context, ‘Joyful Saturday’ (10 Bag-less Days) is an important programme, which frees children from the traditional teaching-learning process and gives them the opportunity to learn through various creative and physical activities. On this day, children can learn with joy and enthusiasm without any academic burden.
