Kutch district is the largest district in the state of Gujarat in the western part of India. Spread over an area of 2,755 sq km, Kutch district is the largest district in India in terms of area. Kutch is considered to be a part of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization based on the fossils found. Is. Kutch was an independent region established in 180 AD. Is. Kutch came under British rule in 1917 and the Maharaja of Kutch accepted British rule as a princely state. Is. History has recorded an earthquake in Kutch on 15th June 1918 which caused the dam of Allah to stop, the water of Indus river stopped flowing in Lakhpat area of Kutch and Kutch had to face water shortage ever since. The epicenter of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on January 6, 2001 was in the Lodai-Dhrang area between Bhuj and Bhachau in Kutch. This was the strongest earthquake in the 14-year recorded geological history of Kutch in which more than 15,000 people lost their lives and thousands of houses were destroyed and billions of rupees were lost along with lives and property.

Shipping industry has developed in cities like Gandhidham, Kandla etc. Gandhidham has a free trade zone for industries, also known as Kandla Free Trade Zone and according to the new policy it is now known as Kandla Special Economy Zone. The transport industry has also grown because of the ports. Apart from this, the transport industry also gets nourishment as there are mines like Pandhro, Mata Madh, Lignite at Umrasar etc. in Kutch.
