What is PARAKH? Its role and importance in primary education
Under the New Education Policy (NEP 2020) of the Government of India, many revolutionary changes have been made in the education sector. One of the most important parts of these changes is ‘PARAKH’. It is very important for primary school teachers, parents and students to understand this system.
The full name of PARAKH is
Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development.
What is PARAKH?
PARAKH is India’s first National Assessment Centre, which functions as a component of NCERT. Its main objective is to bring uniformity in assessment standards among various education boards in India (such as GSEB, CBSE, ICSE).
Main objectives of PARAKH:
To set uniform criteria: To ensure that students from all states of the country are assessed according to uniform standards and guidelines.
To eliminate cramming: The purpose of education is not just to pass exams by cramming, but to see that logical thinking and skills develop in students.
Holistic Development: Assessing not only the academic merit of the student but also his physical, mental and social skills.
Data-driven Improvement: Checking the quality of education through surveys like National Achievement Survey (NAS) and making necessary improvements.
Its impact on primary education:
New Progress Card: From now on, the results of children will not be limited to just the marksheet, but the details of their overall personality will be shown through a ‘Holistic Progress Card’.
Change in the teaching method: The teaching method in the classroom will now become activity-based and experimental.
Ability-based Assessment: Exams will now measure the child’s understanding power instead of his memory.
